Synopsis:
- FLUORO-SORB® 100 Adsorbent and granular activated carbon (GAC) were comparatively evaluated for stabilization of AFFF-contaminated soil, by investigating the reduction in bioaccumulation in earthworms (Eisenia fetida)
- Significant soil immobilization was observed with the FLUORO-SORB® 100 Adsorbent for the 13 PFAS monitored (4 Sulfonates, 6 Carboxylates, 3 (X:2) Fluorotelomer Sulfonates), with >92% leaching reduction with 0.5% adsorbent concentration, and >98% leaching reduction with 4% adsorbent concentration
- 97% reduction in PFAS earthworm body burden was observed with 4% FLUORO-SORB® 100 Adsorbent concentration, with <90% reduction at 0.5% adsorbent concentration (compared to 80% reduction with 0.5% GAC)
- No significant health impacts were observed with the earthworms in this study in the presence of adsorbate compared to the control soil tested
- Deployment of FLUORO-SORB® 100 Adsorbent and GAC for soil stabilization showed both sorbents had significant leaching and earthworm body burden reduction in AFFF-contaminated soils, but FLUORO-SORB® 100 Adsorbent was observed to be more effective than GAC at low adsorbent concentrations
Brief: With the deployment of FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent for soil stabilization in AFFF-contaminated soils, 97% earthworm body burden reduction and >98% leaching reduction (4% adsorbent concentration) was observed for 13 PFAS contaminants with no observed impact on earthworm health.
