Comparing Pfas Removal Across Multiple Groundwaters for Eight GACs and Alternative Adsorbent

Authors: Manmeet W. Pannu, Joseph Chang, Ricardo Medina, Scott A. Grieco, Michael Hwang, Megan H. Plumlee

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/aws2.1345

Synopsis:

  • Comparative RSSCTs with 8 commercially available GAC (bituminous and non-bituminous) and FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent by Orange County Water agencies for groundwater remediation
  • FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent was found to be unaffected by background DOC and had superior media life than the GAC tested. FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent outperformed GAC in all wells, but its superior performance was more notable in the well with higher organic carbon content. Water quality can range significantly from well to well in this district, so resistance to contaminant fouling is critical

Brief: FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent shows superior PFAS removal performance when compared to 8 commercially available GAC in ground water samples from Orange County water district. FLUORO-SORB® Adsorbent does not have reduced efficiency due to organic co-contaminants, such as DOC, which is critical for groundwater sources with varying water chemistries.
