Operator Technician (Chillicothe, OH)

Specialty Minerals Inc., an international, research-based, mining, minerals, and chemical company, has an opening for an Operator Technician at its plant in Chillicothe, OH.  The plant manufactures a raw material used in the paper making process.

The successful candidate will be responsible for day to day plant activities, operating and maintaining of a computer controlled process, performing various quality control lab tests, unloading of bulk product, as well as working in a team environment that promotes safety, clear communication, leadership, creativity and overall, continuous improvement for both the individual and the Company. The candidate will also be responsible for providing maintenance support to the facility.  Duties include calibration and troubleshooting of process equipment, repair/replacement of valves, piping, pumps, and motors, maintaining an inventory system, etc. This plant is remotely managed using a Self-Directed Work Team approach.

Operator Technician must be able to drive Operational Excellence conversion at the plant – coordinating specific duties as assigned.  Successful applicant needs to be able to influence/coach team members for coordinated assignments.

Qualifications include a solid education in computer based process control or related field and/or several years experience working with computer based process control equipment and processes.  The successful candidate must be highly motivated self-starter, creative, display integrity, have outstanding interpersonal skills and be a team player.  Strong leadership traits desired.  A background in any of the following fields is a plus in order to compliment the existing self-directed work team; computer systems installation and maintenance, instrumentation installation and maintenance, PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) maintenance, electrical system installation and maintenance, and mechanical maintenance.  Prior experience preferred with Lean Manufacturing techniques such as 5S, Kaizen, TPM, Standard Work in order to compliment the existing self-directed work team.  Candidate must also have safety experiences. The plant is a continuous operation and the employee will be on rotating shifts including some weekends.  Availability to travel as a technical resource to SMI as required is necessary.  This plant is on its way to becoming a Self-Directed Work Team and has adopted the skill base/technician of the future pay system.
