International Falls and Courtland plants achieve OSHA VPP Star Status

Our Specialty Minerals Inc. PCC Satellite Plants in International Falls, Minnesota and Courtland, AL have been designated “Star” sites after going through a rigorous review by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program staff. These facilities are two of only approximately 1,800 facilities out of six million in the U.S. to receive this highest safety recognition from OSHA. Both facilities were recommended for the Star rating after the first VPP team visit, a rare occurrence.

Finland, Ireland and England locations achieve ISO 14001 Certification

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) sets international standards for a variety of subjects, ranging from screw threads to high-tech cleanrooms. In 1999, ISO published the 14001 standard for Environmental Management Systems to provide a worldwide standard for environmental management systems.

ISO 14001 certification involves two separate assessments of a site’s program by outside environmental auditors. During the Certification Audits, the auditors interview the plant staff, tour the facility, review roles and responsibilities with employees, and evaluate the entire system in great detail. Following certification, auditors return for shorter surveillance visits twice per year for the next three years. A full three-day recertification audit occurs after three years.

At this time, four MTI facilities have achieved ISO 14001 certification. These are:

  • Specialty Minerals UK – Birmingham, England
  • Specialty Minerals Nordic Oy Ab – Aanekoski, Finland
  • Minteq Europe Ltd. – Cork, Ireland
  • Minteq UK Ltd. – Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Others are progressing to full certification.
