MINERALS TECHNOLOGIES INC. ANNOUNCES FIRST COMMERCIAL AGREEMENT FOR FULFILL™ HIGH FILLER TECHNOLOGY WITH LEADING ASIAN PAPER COMPANY AT A PAPER MILL IN CHINA
Unique High-Filler Technology Increases the Papermaker's Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) Filler Level by 3 to 5 Percentage Points
NEW YORK, September XX, 2010—Minerals Technologies Inc., (NYSE: MTX) announced today that it has signed a commercial agreement with a leading Asian paper company, to deploy its new, high-filler technology, Fulfill™ for fine paper produced at its paper mill in China. The agreement, which was effective on August 1, marks the launch of Minerals Technologies' Fulfill™ brand of High-Filler Technologies that offer papermakers a variety of solutions designed to increase the amount of PCC in paper, while decreasing dependency on natural fiber. The range of product offerings in the Fulfill™brand allows papermakers to choose the appropriate solution designed to increase filler levels from 1 to 10 percentage points or more above their current filler level.
“This agreement marks the first acceptance of our new high-filler technologies we have been developing over the last three years that are now part of our rejuvenated product pipeline,” said Joseph C. Muscari, chairman and chief executive officer.
These products and technologies will be tailored for specific operational parameters at different papermakers depending on their individual needs. The primary benefit of the Fulfill™ brand is choice—choosing the percentage of filler that will reduce the papermaker's reliance on higher cost pulp. This, in turn, reduces the consumption of natural resources and energy. Unique Fulfill™High-Filler Technologies offer greener solutions and greater operational savings, while maintaining or improving paper properties and runnability.
“The initial technology that we will deploy under the Fulfill™ brand will be augmented further with technologies developed by four chemical companies we are working with,” said D.J. Monagle, senior vice president and managing director, Paper PCC. “Each of these new approaches will result in increased consumption of our PCC.”
PCC is a specialty pigment for filling and coating high-quality paper. By substituting PCC for more expensive wood fiber, customers like the one in China are able to produce brighter, higher quality paper at lower cost. In 1986, Minerals Technologies originated the satellite concept for making and delivering PCC on-site at paper mills and the concept was a major factor in revolutionizing papermaking in North America. Today, the company has 52 satellite plants in operation or under construction around the world and continues to lead the industry with consistent quality and technical innovation.
Minerals Technologies Inc. is a global resource- and technology-based growth company that develops, produces and markets worldwide a broad range of specialty mineral, mineral-based and synthetic mineral products and related systems and services. The company recorded sales of $907.3 million in 2009.
